Windermere Station Gateway
Overview
Windermere Station is the gateway to the heart of the Lakes.
We are exploring ideas to improve the station and the spaces around it, creating a more welcoming arrival point with better connections for people travelling by train, bus, taxi, bike, car or on foot.
Working with partners, we are looking at ideas for:
- an improved station building
- more comfortable places to wait and sit
- clearer signage and travel information
- improved walking, cycling, bus and taxi connections, and
- greener, more attractive spaces.
We want the station area to feel welcoming, easy to use and right for Windermere.

Aims & Objectives
- An accessible and easy-to-use station building.
- Welcoming public spaces for waiting, meeting and moving around.
- Easier changes between train, bus, taxi, bike, car and walking.
- A clearer route between the station and town centre.
- A greener station area that works well for everyone.
Station Options
OPTION 1: This option keeps the station building in its current location and improves the space around it. It would provide more room inside the station, and better shelter, seating, planting and signage to help people find their way.

OPTION 2: This option creates a new station building on the southern edge of the site. It would create a clearer station entrance, a more open space outside the station, and a large covered area with seating and cycle facilities.

OPTION 3: This option creates a new station building in the centre of the site. It would create a much larger public space, make the station more visible, and improve connections between the station, buses, taxis, parking and town centre.

Restoring Victoria Gardens
We are also exploring whether Victoria Gardens could become a more welcoming place to sit, wait and move through.
Ideas could include new seating, planting and lighting, clearer walking routes between the station and town centre, and information about the history of the space.
