Overview

What is the Local Plan Review?

South Lakeland District Council is beginning a review of the Local Plan for South Lakeland, which applies to the areas of the district outside of the National Parks.

Our Local Plan carefully considers the housing and the economic growth that our area needs to continue to thrive, while also protecting our local and historic character, special landscapes and environment. It allocates sites for housing and other developments, such as new employment sites, and contains the policies that we use to decide whether to grant planning permissions for new development.

Our current Local Plan has been in place for a number of years, but it needs to be reviewed regularly to make sure it continues to meet the challenges facing our area. In particular we need to ensure that it helps deliver the Council’s strong commitment to action on climate change and biodiversity.

We’re at the very start of the review process, and starting to think about the parts of our current Local Plan that need updating, and what the key issues are in planning for the development of the district up to 2040.

Get Involved

That’s why we’ve put together this short survey to start conversations with local communities about the planning issues that matter to them and to help inform how we go about reviewing our Local Plan.

You can find out about the review of our Local Plan and read the documents we have prepared to support this early engagement at www.southlakeland.gov.uk/LocalPlanReview.

To help start our early conversations we have prepared a short Summary Leaflet that sets out what the Local Plan Review is all about and what we think some of the key issues might be. We have also written a longer Discussion Paper and Draft Policy Review Paper if you want to read about the review in more detail. If you want to answer the additional questions in the discussion paper please visit our longer online survey here.

We’ve also drafted a series of short ‘Topic Sheets’ on different topic areas to set out some key facts and figures and useful background information. You can find all the documents on our Local Plan Review web page at the link above.

You don’t need to have read any of the documents to answer this short survey but we hope you will find them interesting and useful.

Why your views matter

We are consulting at this early stage of our Local Plan Review as it is the best time for local communities to get involved in the process when everything is up for discussion and no decisions have been made.

Effective engagement is an essential part of preparing Local Plans to ensure that everyone can share their views and local knowledge, and help inform the content of the Local Plan.

We will be engaging with local communities throughout the Local Plan review process over the next few years. Details of all our future consultations, and how to get involved, can be found on our website at www.southlakeland.gov.uk/LocalPlanConsultations

You can also get involved by coming along to one of our 'drop in' events that are listed at the bottom of the page, where you can view the documents, talk to Council officers and share your views.
